I’ve been reminiscing lately about some of my favorite trips. One of them is the time when we found a ridiculously cheap non-stop flight from NYC to Moscow. I called up a few friends:
“Hey guys, do you wanna go to Russia for a long weekend?”
We left on a Thursday evening after work and spent all day Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and half day on Monday. We met up with a friend of a friend of my sister’s, Olesya, who lived in Moscow and graciously offered to be our tour guide/translator. Good thing, too! Hardly anybody spoke English in Moscow! I did try to learn a few phrases, but I have to admit Russian is a really difficult language to learn. Not only do you have to learn new sounds, words, and grammar…the alphabet is completely different!
I got by learning just a few phrases:
PECTOPAH = Restaurant
SPASEEBA = Thank you
PREEVYET = Hi
DA SVEEDANYA = Goodbye
ANGLEESKEE? = English?
I’d say that we covered most of what we wanted to see in the city, and it actually didn’t feel too rushed. The jet-lag was the worst part of it, but oh-so-totally worth it!
